Nobody needs to be writing all the time, but if you call yourself a writer, you must write some of the time. I spent last week full of fun activities in NYC to celebrate my birthday, so that was a nice break from writing.
Thanks to everyone who sent birthday greetings! I even received a card from one of my blog friends. At first, I wondered how she got my address. When studying journalism, we were always told that almost everyone (even famous people, although I am not famous) is accessible. How much easier that is today with the internet!
We were in NYC, watching Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, a show about a street in LA. That would seem ironic, except there are shows about all kinds of places and situations on (and off) Broadway. Tom Francis was fantastic as writer Joe Gillis, and Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond was so great in the part that you almost think she must be deranged in real life.
At Rockefeller Center, my daughter and I recreated the famous “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” publicity photo from 1932, when construction workers took a lunch break on a beam 850 feet above the ground. Our recreation is more of an optical illusion. We were wearing safety belts, and even though we were 850 feet above the actual ground of Manhattan, the floor of the 30 Rock roof was not that far below us.
The lady who put us in the seatbelts for the recreation photo held out a bucket and asked us if we would like to use props. My daughter chose an apple, and I took a hammer and a chocolate-frosted donut (all made of rubber). I said to the lady, “I’m surprised they don’t have a bucket as one of the props.” The lady responded, “Yeah, sure, but I just work here.”
We went to The View twice, and the first time, we received the book It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time by Bruce Vilanch and Apple Air Pods Pro 2. We also went to Late Night and The Tamron Hall Show (where were received a book by Maria G. Franco, PhD, called Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make—and Keep—Friends). We also saw the play written by Joy Behar called My First Ex-Husband, plus a parody off-Broadway play called Singfeld.
We also went to “The Friends Experience, the One in NYC.” We got to pretend to move the couch up the stairs. Pivot! Pivot! Pivot!
We just kept seeing shows and eating fantastic food. Apparently, I am still taking somewhat of a break right now, sending this out as more of a travelogue and photo story than writing about writing. Some of you may remember the days of yore when you visited someone for dinner, and their vacation slides were foisted upon you through a projector. Oh, no! I am guilty of foisting.
And now I am foisting a Mom brag upon you. I loved seeing MJ the Musical with my daughter because she made the Smooth Criminal costumes for the females and worked on the blue Grammy jacket. She happened to be visiting me in Oklahoma when the costume shop was given free tickets, so I was glad we got to see it together.
I couldn’t help myself because I had so much fun in NYC that foisting overtook me in this blog. Have you ever foisted?
Anyway, now that I am back home in Oklahoma, the time has come to start writing again. I must finish two stories for two contests and complete a few books. If you made it this far through all the foisting, Happy Writing to all of you! Please let me know in the comments what you do when you take a break from writing.
New York looks like a lot of fun, especially when you have a host that lives there to show you the ropes. I foist photos in small doses - a few everyday when traveling if I have internet.
Hi Lisbeth--I love the pictures. What a proud moment for you to see the costumes your daughter made. When I take a break from writing, I am either traveling (just like you did) or going on a special outing with the grandkids. The break is always good for me. But when I get back to writing, I realize how much I enjoy it. Maybe I'm the blog friend who mailed you a birthday card? You signed up for my birthday club via my newsletter a couple of years ago and you provided your address. LOL! So glad you did. I'm thankful for our connection! :)
